Also, jdc, have you followed any of the 12 links incorporated into the article? Read any of the data which is made available in this article which is supposedly just tugging at heart strings...why would we include links to data if all we were aiming for was emotional arguments?

From David Kirby's latest at Huffington Post:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kirby/cdc-has-lost-control-of-t_b_95081.html

"So the CDC now issues a written statement meant to soothe jittery parents, by saying that "the recommended vaccine schedule is flexible." Such decisions, the friendly announcement said, "are best made in consultation with the child's doctor, and parents shouldn't be reluctant to have such discussions."

Of course parents shouldn't be reluctant to have this discussion, but they are. I get nasty emails from some pediatricians, and the number-one complaint I get from them is that, because of people like me, they must now "waste" (their word, not mine) precious billing hours talking to layperson parents about vaccine science.

These doctors' hostility is palpable, (and they hopefully represent a minority of pediatricians). And while I cannot imagine ever consulting anyone of such temperment for medical care in the first place, many parents are simply cowed into silence. For them, the CDC suggestion to ask vaccine safety questions at a well-baby visit is laughable, if not risible."

jdc wrote: "Where’s the data? You are using emotional arguments in an attempt to “tug at the heart strings” of concerned parents - not discussing research."

Hey, are you still convinced that we made this one up? Well, we probably did. Sounds like there are many pediatricians who wouldn't want to waste their time with the conversation. They'd just point to the door.

Okay...not a 'play' this actually happened to me:

Ped : what do you mean you're not getting the HIB vaccine?

Me: I mean I'm not allowing you to give DD any vaccines

Ped: But she'll die if she doesn't have the HIB vaccaine

Me: You mean death is a remote possibility if she comes in contact with and contracrs HIB?

Ped: No, I mean she'll die without the vaccine

Swear to god...she was actually that stupid.

This is the same ped that insisted that all thimerisol was out of all vaccines (until I showed her the package insert for the vial in her own office

oh, she also told me that the CDC has said that you can't get autism from the MMR since they took the thimerisol out...yes, she actually said this...she had no idea that there was never thimerisol in the MMR.

She then fired me...or I fired her...it was hard to tell which actually happened as I was rushing to get my DD the hell outa there.

"We are considering your suggestion for “MMR the Musical” although the first draft seems to be turning out as a tragic opera."

Sadly I agree.

I gave up ped's a long time ago. This type of scenerio is very real.

So I'm browsing a parenting site message board and one parent is talking about the doctor yelling at her because she hadn't had her child vaccinated and another is commenting that it happens at the practice she goes to and she might have to find another doctor. Yep. We make this stuff up, just to make doctors look bad. If only.

jdc325 - Can I assume since you have not commented on any of our purely science-based articles that you take no issue with them? Are you merely disappointed that we have strayed from our impeccable style with this one skit? Perhaps it is a bit lighthearted compared to our many well-researched, well-referenced articles. Can't we lighten the place up just a little bit every once in a while?

Oh, we could have made the doctor much, much crazier and still have fallen short of reality. Here is a thread of parent's experiences with vaccine promoting doctors: http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=446739
Read the summaries (the thread is incredibly long) and then come back and tell us that we were exaggerating the doctor's statements. I personally know someone whose baby was ejected from a pediatric practice at age 6 months because the parents wouldn't vaccinate according to the standard schedule. This is the ONLY pediatric practice in the area, so parents who don't want to follow the schedule either have to do without care for their children or go to a family practice doctor.

It is fiction. If we had taken one of the actual encounters from that thread, most people would have laughed: "You are making that up. No doctor would say that! No doctor would act like that!" So we had to moderate our description.

We are considering your suggestion for "MMR the Musical" although the first draft seems to be turning out as a tragic opera. Would you be interested in the role of Iago?

"I wish the CDC’s vax schedule was a work of fiction, but it’s not."
The fiction I was referring to was the imaginary meeting between frightened parents and an angry, unsympathetic doctor. I'm sorry if you thought that I doubted the provenance of the schedule info.

"And the doctor’s statements might be anecdotal, but unfortunately they aren’t fiction either!"
So this is not a play, but an accurate report of an actual encounter between patients and doctor?

The doctor is a caricature, surely? Reading the 'stage directions' to see how the different parties are represented certainly makes me think that the doc is a caricature.

Well! I didn't realize that someone might thing we made up the vaccine schedule in the article, but I guess all things are possible. I've added a reference at the bottom to the CDC schedule of recommended vaccines. I wasn't aiming for pathos actually. The clue is the "scroll" which the mom is unwinding. This article is a parody, but based mostly on the actual experiences of many, many parents in the U.S. jdc325: I strongly recommend a wider choice of reading material to aid you in telling the difference between pathos and parody.
